There are some ways to spend your summer holidays that are nice and relaxing and there are others that are likely to be some of the best days of your life.

One such type of holiday is a sailing trip with friends or strangers who are after similar experiences.

There are two types of people who will probably not find this article interesting.

Those fortunate enough to already own a cruiser sailing yacht and those who are unfortunate enough to get seasick at the mere mention of the word “boat”.

For the rest of you, stick around because what I am about to suggest, might just result in one of the best holidays you’ve ever had.

What is a sailing holiday and why should I be interested in one?

Generally speaking, a sailing holiday has a lot in common with a road trip in a campervan, except that it takes place on the water.

It combines the thrills of discovering new places, team work and adventure, together with a total sense of freedom, close proximity to nature and the mastering of new skills, many of which are often less obvious to someone.

It is as much about discovery, spontaneity and excitement as it is about partying and getting the perfect tan.

It is about falling in love with life, burning memories in your mind and letting go as much as it is about compromising, respect and decision-making.

In other words, this is one holiday that is about what you want it to be!

Unlike what many people think, a sailing holiday is not just for the über-rich, well-moisturised class of Ralph Lauren wearers.

It’s also not confined to just those with sailing experience.

You could very easily go on a sailing holiday with your friends, having never set foot on a yacht before, not knowing a single thing about wind direction and having no bigger a budget than that of a medium-rating hotel.

The benefits
•    You spend a whole week with your best friends or other interesting people you’ve never met before

•    You get to take part in fun activities that cost nothing extra

•    You get to visit a ton of places that would otherwise be out of reach, such as deserted islands or beaches accessible only from the water,
